Commissioner William "Bill" EdwardsRURAL METRO AMBULANCE SERVICE

Today, at the Region III EMS Council Meeting, Rural Metro Ambulance, the 911 EMS provider for South Fulton County as approved in the Regional Zoning Plan designated by the Georgia Department of Human Resources, asked to begin the process of opening the zone of South Fulton. Their request cited economics as the reason that they would be unable to continue being the service provider for South Fulton. The issue was tabled for further discussion by vote of the Council. Their next meeting is in May.

I appreciate the Council’s decision to table the discussion to allow for a discovery process so that they can make a well informed and fair decision.

As the Council (now under the Georgia Department of Community Health) has the sole authority to designate the County’s 911 EMS provider, it would be premature to discuss what impact, if any, this change in providers will have until a final decision is made.

Rest assured we will work with whomever the Council deems appropriate. Rural metro is a private provider and as such, can make a decision in its own best interest.  Rural Metro is still the provider for South Fulton until a decision is made by the Council and has stated to the Council that there will not be a lapse in service because of their request.

In the meantime, we are not going to rest on our laurels, the County will be working on a transition plan to ensure continuity of services to citizens should Rural Metro no longer be the provider for South Fulton.

We will continue to do as we always have done, to focus on providing quality services to all Fulton County citizens and maintaining public safety.

Most importantly, good things will continue happening in South Fulton.
